Monte Cook Games expanded the free beta of its Cypher Character Builder with campaign management, customizable character options and an integrated 3D dice roller. Announced September 29, 2026, the upgrade gives groups tools to set campaign options and keep character work in one place. The publisher described the new Explorer features as free to use at announcement. Its announcement also outlined upcoming book support and a paid tier, but does not establish whether either had launched by October 6.
What changed in the Cypher Character Builder
The headline change is campaign support. A GM can choose which character options are permitted for a game and invite players to build and maintain characters using those choices. For groups that limit options or combine different campaign tones, this offers a way to set boundaries before character creation. It can also help make expectations clear: decide what material the campaign permits before players make characters, then communicate those choices to the group.
The builder also lets users customize existing character components or create their own. Monte Cook Games names descriptors, types, foci, species, abilities, skills, cyphers, equipment and power shifts as examples. Custom options can be shared with campaign players. A 3D dice roller is another addition: it logs results, and the publisher says GM rolls are hidden from players. These descriptions are the publisher’s feature claims, not a report of independent testing.
What existing users should know
This is an expansion of the builder’s beta, not a new tabletop rules release. The publisher says the builder supports unlimited characters based on virtually all options in the Cypher Character Rulebook. Its tier table also lists character portraits, PDF character-sheet and VTT exports, and sharing a character by link. Those existing capabilities may be relevant to groups deciding whether to keep character creation and reference sheets together.
For existing users, the practical shift is the addition of campaign-level controls and tools to make and share custom options. The announcement lists purchasing books for personal use and creating campaigns among new Explorer features; it separately lists exporting custom content as an Explorer feature. It does not establish that every Cypher title or every book a user owns is included or automatically available to a campaign. Before building a campaign around a particular option, check whether that source is supported and accessible to the people who need it.

What the announcement says about future additions
Monte Cook Games identified the Old Gods of Appalachia Roleplaying Game corebook as the next book planned for the builder. The announcement described character creation, advancement and export as uses once that content is added, but supplied no specific release date. Its September 29 wording does not confirm whether the content had since become available. Groups interested in that setting should therefore verify the current product listing rather than treating the announcement’s forecast as confirmation of a launch.
The publisher also outlined Adept, a paid tier distinct from the free Explorer features. Planned examples include sharing purchased books with campaign members, assembling custom material into reusable sourcebooks, and customizing character sheets and the builder’s appearance. The feature list also mentions creating and uploading custom fillable sheets and reskinning the 3D dice roller. Monte Cook Games called the tier “inexpensive” but gave no price. The announcement said it was expected in the next few weeks; it does not verify a launch by October 6.
A practical way to assess the update
For GMs, the clearest immediate use is setting campaign options and sharing custom choices with players. Before adopting a digital workflow, decide what the group needs: a shared list of allowed options, custom material, exports, or a place to record dice results. Then check each feature against the published tier information. If a campaign depends on a particular book or on sharing purchased content, verify whether that specific material is supported rather than assuming campaign controls unlock it.
At the time of the September 29 announcement, the builder was in beta. The source says the listed new features were free to use then, while other capabilities were marked as coming soon. This is dated announcement evidence, not a live status check. Treat proposed additions separately from features identified as available, and confirm the current status before making a purchase or changing a group’s character workflow.
