How to make a top-down token

  1. Create your free website account or log in. Generation is available only to signed-in GM Craft Tavern members.
  2. Choose a clear character image. Full-body or nearly full-body artwork gives the generator the best information about clothing, equipment and silhouette.
  3. Generate and check the overhead view. Optional instructions can preserve an important weapon, pose, outfit detail or visual style.
  4. Add it to your VTT. Download the transparent PNG, then import it into Foundry VTT, Roll20, Owlbear Rodeo or your preferred map software.

Tip: use a character with visible limbs and limited background clutter. A clear silhouette helps the AI produce a more convincing bird’s-eye view.

What is a top-down token?

A top-down token is character art shown from directly above, as though a virtual camera were looking down at a miniature on a battlemap. Unlike a portrait token or circular avatar, an overhead token shows the body, equipment and facing direction. This makes tactical movement and positioning easier to read during online RPG sessions.

This maker is useful for player characters, NPCs, monsters, guards, adventurers and science-fiction units. The resulting transparent PNG can sit naturally on dungeon floors, wilderness maps, starship decks and other grid-based scenes.

Is the top-down token maker free?

A free GM Craft Tavern website account is required. Signed-in members can generate and inspect watermarked previews within their daily allowance. Downloading an unwatermarked original uses one token.

Which image formats can I upload?

The maker accepts PNG, JPEG and WebP character images up to 15 MB.

Does it only crop my image?

No. The AI interprets the source character and recreates the figure from an overhead tactical camera angle. It is intended to produce a genuine top-down pose rather than a circular portrait crop.

Can I use the token in Foundry VTT or Roll20?

Yes. The transparent PNG format works with Foundry VTT, Roll20 and most virtual tabletop or map applications that accept custom tokens.

How long are my creations stored?

Every preview and original is retained for 24 hours after generation, whether downloaded or not. During those 24 hours, downloading the same original again does not use another token. The service is not permanent cloud storage.
