Remove backgrounds from RPG characters & tokens
A painted backdrop can look great in a portrait, but get in the way on a battlemap. Upload your own artwork to separate a hero, monster or NPC from the surrounding scene, then save a transparent PNG, WebP or AVIF for your next game.

Top-down tokens and battlemap assets
Remove unwanted backgrounds from overhead miniatures, creatures and props. Place your chosen image on a battlemap in Foundry VTT, Roll20 or another virtual tabletop without a solid square hiding the terrain beneath it.
Circular tokens and token borders
Upload a circular token or decorative frame and compare the results. Check the whole outline before downloading: one try may keep the border while another isolates the character. Detailed frames and glowing effects sometimes need extra cleanup.

How to remove a token background
1. Choose your artwork. Upload a character, token, monster or prop.
2. Compare the tries. Switch between the light and dark preview to check the edges.
3. Download your favourite. Choose PNG, WebP or AVIF and bring your transparent image into your next session.
Frequently asked questions
Is the background remover free?
Yes. You can remove backgrounds from up to 10 images a day without an account, one image at a time. A free account gives you 30 images a day and lets you upload several together. Each original image counts once, however many results you receive.
Why do I get several tries?
Different artwork needs different treatment. One try may do better with fine hair, another with armour or a token frame. Compare them and download whichever looks best. There is nothing to select before uploading.
Can I remove backgrounds from several tokens at once?
Yes. Sign in to upload up to 5 images together, within your remaining daily allowance. Keep the whole upload under 25 MB. You can download finished images while the others are still being prepared.
Will my PNG have a transparent background?
Yes. The light and dark backgrounds are only there to help you inspect the result. The downloaded PNG has a transparent background, so you can place it over your map or token design.
Can I use the images in Foundry VTT or Roll20?
You can upload your downloaded PNGs to your virtual tabletop. For circular portraits, add a frame with the Token Maker. For top-down tokens, check the scale and orientation when placing them on your map.
What if a result removes part of my token?
Check the other tries first. Busy backgrounds, thin weapons, transparent effects and intricate borders can be harder to separate. Start with a clear image and inspect the result before using it. This tool removes backgrounds; it does not redraw missing details.
What images can I upload?
Use PNG, JPG, WebP or AVIF images up to 10 MB each and 4096 × 4096 pixels. Upload artwork you own or have permission to use. Characters, monsters, top-down miniatures, token borders and RPG props are all good starting points.

Uploads and cutout results may be reviewed by GM Craft Tavern for occasional moderation. Temporary images and moderation copies are automatically deleted within 24 hours. Downloads may expire sooner; this page does not restore results after a refresh.
PNG, WebP and AVIF preserve transparency. Same as original keeps one of these formats; JPG and other non-transparent originals use PNG. Image metadata is removed from downloaded results.
